It’s a good documentary... I find him a bit annoying though.

He also did a Spitfire documentary, on a Mark I; so rare!

It’s on my list. Yes I find his personality, ahem unique but I ignored it and he’s clearly very passionate.

He’s never been one for the camera, though he has done quite a few programmes on British history from Canal boats to Spitfires, both before and after. He’s very passionate.

Not bad for a truck mechanic that likes to ride motorbikes though.

It’s his passion and where he’s from that draws people to watch him and gets programme makers to get him to do more.

I remember when it was first aired and when it did a fly over of our city and our airport. We have an Avro Vulcan ‘gate guards’ at our very small airport that donated parts to keep that one going.

It’s a hell of a sound those engines make when they fly over.

The aircraft was faster and more manoeuvrable than many fighter jets of it’s time. But the only time it really saw aggression was during the Falklands war.

Yeah, certainly the content is good.

But the best English documentaries I’ve seen have been voiced by Jeremy Clarkson.

Al Murray the comedian (aka The Pub Landlord) has done a couple or really good WWII documentaries, worth looking up.

The most interesting events around the Vulcan are Operations Black Buck 1 to 7. Using 11 Victor’s to refuel and fly two Vulcans’s 1,000 miles from Ascension to the Falkland Islands each mission to drop either 1,000lb bombs or two or four Shrike anti radar missiles. Quite something when they only had one runway to take off from also.

I believe only one of the 21 bombs landed on the runway in the Falkland Island to take out the runway (Though Hercules were still able to use it) from fighter use. The Vulcan was a nuclear bomber so it never had to be too accurate, so not only did they have to get the Vulcans back in the air but had to retrain all the pilots for in flight refueling and how to bomb with a much higher degree of accuracy.

Bombers are really cool. I mean I hate war but I can appreciate the engineering ingenuity that it provoques.

Nothing says “figure out that equation for the wing tip profile” like bombs being dropped at night during carpet bombings.
